Family history Indiana style

Oak Grove Presbyterian Church:  Mamaw's church growing up

Grandfather Nichter built the brick fireplace and kept the church maintained

Of course, there was no running water; it had to be hauled from this pump to the kitchen

There never was indoor plumbing; not too many young people today have used an outhouse!

One for gentlemen; one for ladies - just watch out for snakes and critters

Lots of memories for these two

This is the same Bible that was used while Mamaw and her family attended church services and events

This is the brick fireplace Grandfather Nichter built

Mamaw says this area was where her group held Sunday School classes, in the open with the rest of the pews, etc.

Mamaw noticing the missing steeple on top of the church

The Oak Grove Cemetery faced the front of the church across the road and the sides seen in this view

Across the road from the front of the church; these grave markers dated from the early 1800's; these people certainly lived during the infant years of this country

Although the top of this marker fell off, the image is still powerful

It was such a beautiful day for our visit

This is the house Mamaw lived in growing up

Another view of Mamaw's house

The Nichter store, which I have historical pictures of from the Hayden museum, was later turned into this Masonic Lodge.

This was one of the houses Papaw lived in growin up; there are more pictures of this home from the historical museum.

Judging from this antique wagon, this toy has been sitting out since Papaw lived there!

This gas station was in Hayden, but it was moved by the museum for preservation.

Here comes Terry, joining us in his new Lotus....remember the yellow banana?

Cool car from every angle.

Ben, Terry, Garry

The Who's Who of Hayden

A typical classrom from Hayden High School.

The 43rd governor of the state of Indiana was from Hayden

Many celebrities were friends with the governor.

From earlier, this was one of the homes Papaw lived in.

Here is the featured article of the moving of the gas station.

This is what a quart of oil used to be stored in when a car needed an oil change

Grandpa Nichter; Mamaw's dad

Great grandfather Nichter, Mamaw's grandfather.

Terry had to leave but we were glad to see him for our short visit.

This was the home Mamaw and Papaw got married in.  I remember the home very well.

This was the school Papaw attended during the 2nd grade.  8 grades in one room.  One teacher.

This is the family cemetery.
